This is pretty much where the thermometer on our balcony hovered all weekend. It was probably a few degrees hotter away from the window, out of the shade.

Is it "too good to be true" or an absolute scam? People affected with diabetes appear to be particularly attractive targets for the marketing pros. Somebody out in "invention world" is forever designing the newest and best glucose monitor; you must buy toothpaste, food, socks, ad infintum specially designed for the diabetic; Liberty Medical will take all the worry away if you use their service for diabetic supplies.

This close attention to the treatment and comfort of a nasty condition always sounds so honest and sincere when a celebrity, medical specialist, or sympathy-garnering individual swears you will be so much better off with their product. You don't have much to worry about it if you're covered by Medicaid or Medicare, these purveyors of medical merchandise will assure you. Folks covered by these programs are extremely desireable targets for the diabetic supplies market.

This is not in and of itself a bad thing. What is bad is the extraordinarily high prices placed on these products. There is not one reason in the world, that I can uncover, for glucose testing strips to cost $1 plus for a single strip. Shoot, yea, they'll give you a free monitor. Whoopee! The test strips are the big-money draw. Of course, no body's testing strips fits anybody else's monitor should you happen to find testing strips on sale. Charging $6 for a tube of diabetic toothpaste? Name a necessity and price the "norma" as opposed to the "diabetic" version. Where's the consumer police patrol?

But I detour from the focus of my research. I saw an ad on TV for a "new" diagnostic tool that measures your foot temperature and alerts you to hot spots that may be indicative of diabetic ulcerations. I probably wouldn't have paid much attention, excepting the spokesperson reminded me more of someone who should be dressing anorexic fashion models or doing hair on a fashion runway. The exaggerated "Hey, I'm gay" lisping is nauseating...
