Off Topic

Erie is a great town! It seems that everyday there is something to do, and most weekends there is some terrific large community gathering. This weekend its the Arts Festival, and in the up coming weeks we'll have the Roar on the Shore, The Blues and Jazz Festival, Celebrate Erie(or whatever they are calling it this year), as well as weekend block parties all summer long.

This town is crammed full of fun and activities, and people who love to share a good time together. Its great and its nice to bring people from out of town and show them what Erie is all about.

Yet there is one caveat to all this excitement. One aspect of this scene that has dampened my enthusiasm to entertain friends and family outside my home -- I am reluctant to take people to restaurants lately due from a string of bad experiences.

So I've been motivated to write this piece not to trash establishments, but to shed light on some issues I've encountered. I bet I'm not alone and maybe this will help 'clean' things up . . . .

I don't consider myself a clean freak, and I don't make it a habit to go out looking for something to complain about, and to be fair and fully open, I'm not exactly dinning at 4 star restaurants, but a clean salt shaker shouldn't be considered up scale accommodations.

Going back a little, I was once at a bar and diner and ate a terrific sandwich and fries. I couldn't use the ketchup because it was crusted completely over on top. We've all seen some of this to a degree, I'm sure, but this was entirely over the top.

Knowing the owner, who is not the manager, I filed this experience away with the intent to bring it up next time we spoke. Well, we ran into each other, and he's proud of his place, but I did mention it to him and since then I've noticed items have been cleaner.

But I didn't like being put in that position, but it was needed. I spoke up in another place about their salt...
